Dr. Chang-sheng Wang is now a Professor at the Department of Agronomy, National Chung-Hsing University (NCHU). He got BSc in Agronomy and MS with major in Crop Physiology from Food Crop Research Institute both from NCHU, Taiwan. He probably is the only one ever in the world with polio studies Agronomy and practices Agriculture in his whole life. Chansen got his Ph. D. at the University of Illinois with major in Molecular Genetics in soybean. He invented a smart but expensive method to extract high quality mRNA from the black seed coats soybean and proved that chalcone synthase (CHS) gene family is encoded by I locus. He had cloned most of the genes for the complete flavonoids biosynthetic pathway in black seed coats variety of soybean.
Chansen worked as assistant, associate and senior researcher then served as the Director at the Agronomy Division, Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Council of Agriculture for 23years. He developed a rice mutation pool contains 3,000 mutant lines and wide diversity on the japonica rice variety, TNG67, using sodium azide mutagenesis.
In 2006, he joined Agronomy Department NCHU and developed another indica mutation pool on the IR64 variety using the same method. His studies are based on these mutants, many mutant lines have been studied and genes were identified for rice improvement. In the recent ten years, he devoted his rice research on agricultural sustainability such as, value-added and environmental friendly variety development. In rice disease improvement, he established and screened mutants for blast, bacterial blight and sheath blight-resistant lines from two mutation pools, using QTL mapping, marker-assisted gene pyramiding he developed two rice varieties with broad spectrum resistance to bacterial blight and many lines with double resistances will be released soon. For value-added on rice. Dr. Wang developed many lines with nutrients (Zn, Fe, low glycemic index, antioxidants) enforcement or modification on grains (aroma, proteins, starch, pericarp colors, grain compositions).
Recently, he developed a new variety with purple leaf, brittle culm, and bacterial blight resistance which are multi-functions of diverse applications. Due to his contributions on agriculture, Dr. Wang was elected as a Top Ten Agricultural Experts of Taiwan in 2015. His studies and varieties are aimed to fit three Ss (security, safety, sustainability) plus Values (health, money) and expect to be beneficial to all mankind.
Agronomy
1. Mutagenesis and breeding
Development of two major rice mutant pools for japonica (TNG67) and indica (IR64) type varieties with wide diversity for studying mechanism and applying in breeding and gene functional study.
2. Molecular breeding and Genomics
Study on disease resistance and improvement in rice, study on the aroma and molecular breeding in rice, study on the rice brittleness and application in sustainable agriculture, breeding for added-value and multiple functions rice varieties through molecular approaches.
